The Asian Community Convener Project focuses on establishing a baseline understanding of where and how anti-racism work is being advanced by Asian community organizations in the province of British Columbia. Our team, which consists of coordinators from Filipinx, Punjabi, Cantonese, and Chinese communities, conducted interviews and spoke to leaders and people across the diaspora in the province, asking about what their definition of anti-racism is, their capacity to address it, and their hopes to further their work with support specific to them.
The Report and Community Catalogue are the result of a year-long process, and highlight key recommendations to support and strengthen community capacity to further systemic anti-racism work. The report outlines the voices of community members speaking about how important the broadening and redefining of what ‘anti-racism’ work is. They also urge the need for deeper and more direct connections between Asian communities. We feel galvanized by the strength of community organizations who, with limited resources, continue to create and hold culturally resonant spaces, where harmful norms can be challenged. We are proud to share these insights with you, and we are grateful to the wisdom that was shared with us by our communities.
The Community Convener Projects, including the Black and Interfaith Community Convener Projects, were established in May 2021 by the British Columbia Multiculturalism branch, reporting to the Ministry of Attorney General.
